Historical land management practices on Moloka‘i have left huge areas of the island in a state of high degradation and erosion, impacting the community's food security and key cultural subsistence resources depended on for survival.

Through community-led restoration efforts, ‘Āina Momona is building a workforce development program that seeks to revitalize the ahupua‘a management system in the 21st century, bringing the inherent sustainability of these systems back to our land management practices today. Their current work mitigating erosion and protecting subsistence resources mauka to makai in the Ka‘amola ahupua‘a displays the efficacy and power of their vision.

-Jane Au, Program Director, ʻĀina Momona

This learning call is hosted by Funder Hui and will be part of a series focused on ahupuaʻa restoration efforts across Hawaiʻi.

Speaker bios:

-Born and raised on Moloka‘i, Walter Ritte has been a pillar of social activism in Hawai‘i for over 40 years. He was recruited into activism at an early age by cultural icons like Charlie Maxwell and Frenchy DeSoto. With his devoted wife, Loretta, by his side, Walter joined the kūpuna of Maui and Moloka‘i in forming Hui Alaloa (group of the long trail), a community organization dedicated to the preservation of Hawaiian rights and the protection of natural resources.

-Noa Kekuewa Lincoln has worked in marine and terrestrial ecosystem restoration and conservation around the Pacific, and has coupled these efforts with cultural and environmental education and community engagement.

-Jane Lokomaikaʻikeakua Au was raised on the shores of Māeaea, on the island of Oʻahu. She obtained her BA and MA in Religion at UH Mānoa. Her goal is to work towards a more sustainable future, where humans live in harmony with natural and cultural resources, and the rights of Indigenous People are upheld and respected.
